- I posted the following question on rec.games.video.classic and
- no one knew the answer, but someone suggested I try comp.sys.cbm,
- so here goes:
-
- Recently the sound died on my C64. I don't know what happened,
- but in the middle of playing a game, the sound just stopped.
-
- One unexpected side effect of this is that it seems to have
- affected randomizing somehow. Specifically, in the game Space Taxi,
- some of the more challenging boards are now easy because "random"
- events (such as falling stars, snowflakes, winds, etc) don't occur.
-
- Thanks to this, I've gotten to the 25th and final screen, the
- "Mystery Screen" for the first time in many years. On this screen
- is written the following:
-
- Eat the PIE until a "FIRE" glows, then
- go UP until it stops, touch a STAR and
- you'll see the hidden SECRET MENU!!!
-
- I remember seeing this years ago, but never figuring out what
- it means. If anyone knows what this is all about, *please* e-mail
- me and let me know. It's been subconciously bugging me for years.
-
- Also, if anyone knows why the loss of sound would affect game
- play the way it does, I'm curious about that too. I seem to remember
- once reading something about how the randomizer gets its "seed" value
- from noise generated by the sound chip?
